The staircase began on the other side of the shop, but I quickly realized it would render the wall useless on the second floor. I felt it more important to illustrate the details of the maker space. than seeing the entire display case on the first floor.
This was part of a Gamejam at CG Spectrum with a 1 month timeline.. The brief stated that it had to be a 2D game with a witch theme.
Inspiration came from Bomberman that was developed by Hudson Soft in 1983.
I worked and communicated remotely with game developer, Ben Gaucher. I was in charge of the art, but made sure to get Ben's opinions on the concepts.
We decided that we wanted a younger character with attitude.
I simplified her costume to increase clarity during gameplay .
Originally Maple had a brown hat, but we felt she needed something darker to keep the player's focus.
I designed a villain without arms and with a simple round shape because I didn't want it to compete with the witch in maintaining the player's focus.
I lowered it's saturation a bit for this same purpose.
Clarity and visibility were the two main goals I had in mind for all of these concepts.
